Israel begins bombing Gaza City after expanded offensive gets green light

Israel launched overnight attacks on Gaza City and its outskirts, residents said on Thursday, despite rising domestic and international opposition to its military action in the Palestinian enclave. The Israeli defence ministry on Wednesday approved plans to call up 60,000 reservists as part of major assault on the Gazan capital.
